This work describes a study of the mechanism and corrosion rate of steel bars in concrete in seawater. It focused on influences of concrete crack width on macrocell effect and, on corrosion rate determined using a polarisation curve model. Experimental results are compared for corrosion behaviours of steel bars in two concretes. A mechanism is proposed to interpret the different influences, in the short and long term, of crack width on the macrocell effect. A test procedure is used to obtain polarisation curves of steel in concrete and these curves are found very different to those expressed by the Butler-Volmer equation. An empirical polarisation formula is developed based on the postulation of two parallel kinetic processes at the steel/passive-film/concrete interface: an active corrosion process and a film growth/dissolution process. The formula is used to model the experimental polarisation curves by curve-fitting analyses. Good curve-fitting results are found between the experimental and model curves and the corrosion rate and two Tafel parameters of steel in concrete are obtained through the curve-fitting analysis.

Thermogravimetric studies were done to understand the corrosion kinetics. Standard techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X – Ray Analysis (EDAX) and X – Ray Diffractometer (XRD) were used to characterize the corrosion products.

Mild steel suffers from severe corrosion in aggressive medium of acids during pickling processes. The use of inhibitors is one of the most effective and practical methods of protection of corrosion of metals in acid medium. The presented work describes a new way to detect anomalous seawater samples using chemometric tools. For this, the concentrations of the major components of seawater (chloride, fluoride, calcium, magnesium, sulphate and alkalinity) were measured toghether with the H+ affinity spectrum. As chemometric tools, Principal Component Analysys and Partial Least Squares regression were used to classify seawater samples and to make a calibration model with estuary water samples. These tools can be used as an additional and simple monitoring method for testing seawater quality. This study shows how long chemometric techniques and multivariate analysis can reach in the analysis of a natural and complex system such as seawater. Besides, the seawater H+ affinity spectrum, whose obtainment is easy, fast and with a low cost, was used with advantage.

The present study behavior of boiler steel ASTM-SA213 T-22 (used in most of the power plants in the Northern India) has been investigated for high temperature erosion-corrosion behavior in the uncoated as well as coated condition. Detonation Gun thermal spraying process was used for coating on boiler steel. SEM/EDAX, XRD and X-ray mapping analysis done to reveal the microstructure and compositional features of boiler steel. The microstructure indicates uniform and dense coating. Thermogravimetric techniques is used to investigate the erosion-corrosion behavior at 900?C for 1000 hours. SEM/EDAX, XRD and X-ray mapping techniques were used to analyze the corrosion products.

Poly-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) is a semicrystalline thermoplastic in the polyaryletherketone (PAEK) family, with excellent mechanical and chemical resistance properties that are retained to high temperatures. It is extensively used in the aerospace, automotive, teletronic, and chemical process industries. It is highly resistant to thermal degradation as well as attack by both organic and aqueous environments. It is attacked by halogens and strong Lewis acids as well as some halogenated compounds and aliphatic hydrocarbons at high temperatures. The Young's modulus is 3.6 GPa and its tensile strength 90 to 100 MPa. PEEK has a glass transition temperature at around 143°C and melts around 343°C. PEEK's mechanical properties at elevated temperatures have led to it being used in at least two varieties of Reprap extruder as thermal insulation. PEEK is considered an advanced high performance plastic used in medical implants. A disadvantage is the high price, which limits its application to high value items. The intracellular survival of waterborne pathogens in Acanthamoeba trophozoites and cysts confirms that these pathogens can be protected by novel disinfection methods used to disinfect water samples, and how Acanthamoeba castellanii can be considered as a protective host in the environment for these pathogens.

In this work performance of the rotor-stator mixers is investigated including: identification of the power number, drop break up, effects of micromixing on the course of complex chemical reactions, effect of agitation on mass transfer with chemical reaction in two-phase liquid-liquid systems, and energetic efficiency of mixing and mass transfer processes. Experimental results are interpreted and predicted using phenomenological models and CFD simulations.

Chemical warfare agents (CWAs) are a growing concern to many countries. Dissimilar-metal joints are used widely in various industrial applications due to both technical and economic reasons. The materials used for high temperature applications are subjected to hot corrosion and high temperature wear.The present work deals with to evaluate the behaviour of un-welded and dissimilar weldments of AISI 304 steel and 20MnMoNi55 steel made by TIG welding at temperature 900°C, samples when exposed to high temperature oxidation in air and molten 75%wt sodium sulphate + 25%wt potassium sulphate salt under cyclic condition. Compare the oxidation and hot corrosion performance of the un-welded steel with dissimilar weldments sample and evaluate its suitability for using in boiler applications. The experiments are conduct in laboratory under cyclic condition and after high temperature oxidation,hot corrosion studies were characterized by the techniques such as XRD, SEM/EDAX and X-ray mapping to know an insight corrosion mechanism based on morphology of the corroded products formed on the un-welded and dissimilar weldments sample.The result shows that corrosion resistance is in order of AISI304-DSW- 20MnMoNi55 in both air as well as in molten salt environment.

In this work, cultivable microorganisms isolated from the larval gut of sugarcane pests were characterized according to their extracellular enzymatic activity in carbon sources and molecularly identified. The obtained results have demonstrated the gut of sugarcane pests as source of microorganisms capable of enzymatic degradation of cellulose and xylan and ability to produce xylitol, whose potential for use in the industrial biotechnology has yet to be revealed.

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes have been employed in pretreatment unit operations in desalination processes. In order to predict NF performance, a systematic study on the filtration performance of NF membranes against seawater is required. In this work, NF membranes have been studied in details to check their filtration performance with salt mixtures at salinity levels similar to that of seawater. The membranes were characterized using Atomic Force Microscopy. The Spigler-Kedem model (SKM), artificial neural network (ANN), and modified Donnan Steric Pore Model (DSPM) were used to analyse the experimental data. The SKM model was used to fit the experimental data of rejection with the permeate flux in order to determine the reflection coefficient and the solute permeability. The ANN model was used to predict the rejection versus pressure and the rejection versus permeate flux. The DSPM model was modified by the inclusion of the dielectric constant term and the effect of osmotic pressure for solutions with higher concentration compared to those reported previously. Finally, the Verbene cost model was employed to check the performance and economics of NF for desalination applications.

Early biological treatment studies with the raw leachate did not yield high COD and nitrogen removals. In order to improve biological treatability, the landfill leachate was subjected to pretreatment by chemical coagulation-flocculation followed by air stripping of ammonia. The pretreated leachate was subjected to aerobic biological treatment in an aeration tank by fed-batch operation. In order to improve the extent of COD and ammonium nitrogen removals, pretreated leachate was subjected to adsorbent supplemented biological treatment in an aeration tank operated in fed-batch mode by using powdered zeolite (PZ) and powdered activated carbon (PAC) as adsorbents. Chemical oxidation was used to further reduce COD content of landfill leachate after PAC added biological treatment. Three oxidizing agents (H2O2, Fenton’s reagent, NaOCl) were used in different concentrations for chemical oxidation.
